Due to Gozo’s proximity and historical ties with Italy, restaurants are predominantly Italian. A few restaurants serve traditional Maltese dishes, whilst others have a French and English influence.
As a Maltese culinary highlight all restaurants feature delicious grilled fish dishes served with fresh local vegetables and roasted potatoes accompanied by excellent local wines.
The best restaurants are centred in the seaside villages of Xlendi and Marsalforn. A few gems can be found in the capital of Victoria, in the busy harbour Mġarr or the picturesque village of Xagħra.
Endless numbers of small cafés, situated on the seafronts or in the historical part of Victoria, invite to sit and watch the world go by. One of the famous Maltese delicacies ‘pastizzi’, a cheese or pea filled puff pastry pie, should be given a try.
Nightlife in the Maltese Islands is at its best during summer weekends. There are very popular nightclubs and bars in Gozo, situated in Xlendi, Marsalforn and Victoria. Some of them set in attractive 19th century buildings or near the sea with views over the fishing boats or the open sea.
The highlight of the Maltese Islands’ festival calendar are the ‘festas’ that take place from early June to September to commemorate each towns’ patron saint.
For the Gozitans the three-day festa means the event of the year with their best clothes, brass bands, horseracing, spectacular fireworks, and general merriment reflecting the laid-back Gozitan culture.
